Hyperbaric Air Therapy

HAT provided as ambient air under pressure

Can hyperbaric air be used for cancer? Yes, ambient air and 100% oxygen are used by many health care providers whose patients have cancer, special needs conditions, fatigue and cardiovascular disease among many dozens of other health problems. Hyperbaric oxygen therapy benefits include pushing various nutrients (i.e., antioxidants) deeper into tissues from the blood. Other benefits include in heart disease, memory and dementia and infections. Hyperbaric oxygen indications and costs vary from $175.00 to $800.00.

NUTRITIONAL HYPERBARIC THERAPY (NHT) – INVESTIGATIONAL/EXPERIMENTAL*

Nutritional Hyperbaric Therapy (NHT)

Hyperbaric therapy has medically approved uses when 100% oxygen is utilized. The use of standard hyperbaric oxygen therapy utilized in allopathic medicine is restricted in terms of indications and safety as 100% oxygen runs the risk of oxygen toxicity, tissue damage and explosions. Dr. Wald makes available to his patients ambient air hyperbaric therapy that uses ambient air (from the surrounding environment that is filtered) and fed into the chamber under pressure. There are no studies regarding the use of ambient air hyperbaric therapy at this time for use with any medical or health condition or for preventative purposes.

Something special offered by Dr. Wald…

Nutritional Hyperbaric Therapy (NHT) is the method of choice for stress relief chosen by Dr. Wald and involves the use of ambient air that on average contains between 19-21% oxygen. This ambient air is filtered (cleaned)  prior to entering the mild-hyperbaric chamber at a pressure of around 1.5 pounds per square inch of pressure.

NHT does not run the risk of oxygen toxicity because this only happens with higher than normal (i.e., 100%) of oxygen. Dr. Wald combines NHT with a topical nutritional lotions that the individual rubs on their skin prior to entering the hyperbaric chamber.

The pressure of the hyperbaric chamber has the potential of pushing the nutrition through the skin, a type of absorption known as transdermal absorption, such that the blood receives the nutrition directly bypassing the digestive tract.  Read more about Dr. Wald’s NHT breakthrough below.  There are well documented effects of transdermal (through the skin) nutrition increasing blood levels of certain nutrients. There is no scientific studies regarding the combined use of hyperbaric pressure combined with transdermal nutrition. Therefore, use of ambient air hyperbaric and/or transdermal nutrition is not a proven therapy for treatment of any health condition.

The Hyperbaric Chamber

Our state-of-the-art portable chamber has plenty of room for the patient to sit and read a book, listen to music or just relax. The chambers are designed for one person to be treated at a time. The chamber is has a clear, so you will be able to see outside. Communication with the hyperbaric technician is possible both through the window of the chamber and via an alarm system held in the hand or placed on the lap. During treatment, the chamber is “compressed” to a pressure that is 2 to 4.1 times that of sea level. This is the same pressure a scuba diver feels at 33 to 45 feet under the surface of the ocean.

You will notice a lot of “air noise” during your treatment. This is a normal part of the chamber function and your ears may “pop” just like what people often experience in an airplane that is ascending to a higher altitude.

How Does the Hyperbaric Chamber Work?

Normally, the atmosphere exerts 14.7 pounds per square inch of pressure on your body at sea level while you breathe air that is approximately 21% oxygen and 79% nitrogen. During an HBOT treatment, you will breathe 19-21% oxygen under increased atmospheric pressure within the chamber. This combination of oxygen and increased pressure causes large amounts of oxygen to be dissolved in your blood and tissues higher than the usual amount of oxygen dissolved. This dissolved oxygen can penetrate areas that red blood cells cannot reach, revitalizing tissues that receive poor

blood flow or potentially enhancing the health of tissues that do not have compromised oxygenation.

What Will I Feel during Treatment?

During your treatment, you sit upright inside the chamber. The chamber door will be closed, and you will begin to hear the air circulating. During this pressurization phase, you may feel a “fullness” or “pressure” sensation in your ears. A hyperbaric technician will be outside the chamber at the start of the therapy to assist and coach you on how to clear your ears and to address any other needs you may have. Compression generally lasts five minutes, depending on how effectively you are able to clear your ears. When you have reached the prescribed treatment pressure, the “fullness” or “pressure” sensation will cease. During treatment, you will be able to watch TV or a movie on an ipad, or listen to music or a book on CD. The total treatment time is approximately 30-60 minutes, and sometimes longer, depending upon the judgment of our doctors.

Are there Any Other Effects?

Generally, patients do not experience side effects from HBOT. However, some patients report a crackling sensation in their ears between treatments. This may be relieved in the same manner you clear your ears during compression. If the crackling sound continues, please tell one of our staff members. As with all medical procedures and treatments, there are some side effects that may result from exposure to the hyperbaric oxygen. These are rare, but will be discussed with you in detail by the physician before your treatment. Our informed consent outlines other potential side effects for your consideration.

Treatment Goals

Not every patient will respond well to treatments. If no improvement is seen within 20 to 30 treatments the chance of success is progressively lessened. The ultimate goal of ambient air hyperbaric therapy is to reduce stress thus supporting the bodies natural healing capacity in health conditions often associated with stress.

After 20 to 30 treatments, when there is a good response, hyperbaric therapy may be stopped. Your body has been given the “kick start” it needed to help you finish healing on your own. For radiation and osteomyelitis, many more treatments may be required.

Each treatment takes approximately 30 minutes to 2 hours total depending upon your health condition(s). This can involve a good portion of your time, yet is very important that you have all your treatments. Treatments are scheduled Monday through Friday.

Throughout your treatment it is important that you stay in contact with your primary care physician. Our physicians are fully licensed, but their specialty is not in hyperbaric medicine and wound care. For problems not related to your wound care, your physician must remain your constant source of care. Our physicians will keep your primary physician updated on our progress with your care.

During Your Treatment

  • Do not use any tobacco products while being treated with hyperbaric oxygen. Smoking prevents full oxygen use by the blood and decreases the size of your blood vessels.

  • Keep your physician up to date on your current medications.

  • If you become ill (cold, sinus problems, diarrhea, nausea, swollen feet, problems breathing, chest pains, low blood sugar, etc.), inform your primary care physician. If you need to cancel your hyperbaric treatment, please let us know as soon as possible.

  • If you have diabetes, we will check your blood sugar at the beginning and end of the treatment. HBOT can cause your blood sugar to lower. Your blood sugar should be above 120 before entering the chamber.

  • You may take a beverage in an approved container into the chamber with you.

Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy Consultations

A treatment regimen* will be designed for your individual needs. This treatment regimen, along with other recommendations, will be shared with your referring physician, who will remain responsible for your general medical management.

To arrange a consultation with one of our physician specialists, talk with your primary care physician or call Dr. Michael Wald at: 914-552-1442.

*Ambient air oxygen, or atmospheric oxygen, intake under increased atmospheric pressure is a potent drug; therefore, hyperbaric oxygen must be administered carefully to avoid toxic effects. However, our office does not provide 100% oxygen under pressure thus avoiding the oxygen toxicity problems inherent to the traditional medical use of hyperbaric oxygen. It is our belief that atmospheric oxygen under pressure provides increased oxygen concentrations to tissues with far greater safety than 100% oxygen under pressure.

Importantly, hyperbaric oxygen therapy provided by our office should not be considered a substitute for 100% oxygen (hyperbaric) provided under pressure.
