    Body fat and Phase Angle – what are they?What is phase angle and why is it considered one of the most important tests that you can every do for your health? Phase angle is measured with tiny electrodes on the skin and measures the electrical health of your cells. The higher the phase angle the healthier and the lower the closer to death you are.

  • What is a bioimpedance test (aka body composition)? This test measures your metabolic rate, lean body mass, water balance in and outside of your cells and other parameters that predict lifespan and death risk.

  • Should I have my body composition measured before I begin a weight loss plan? Yes because if your know your metabolic rate you can see if your diet and exercise efforts increase it. Without a body comp test you can’t know if your weight loss is from fat and water or from lean body mass; lean mass you do not want to lose.

Body Composition Metabolic Assessment

Did you know that the body composition test, a test that measures how fast or slow you burn calories, and reveals what percentage of water, muscle and fat that you are made of (otherwise known as body composition) is the single best test for predicting overall quality of life and longevity? Well, it’s true! No matter what you do for your health if your efforts do not result in an improvement in your body composition you are not likely reducing your risk of morbidity and mortality. The good news is that there are several lifestyle measures that, especially when personalized to your exact health goals and testing, can statistically improve your quality and potentially length of life by reducing your risk of dying prematurely from either preventable or delayable diseases (i.e, heart disease, certain cancers, arthritis, weight gain and more).

Phase angle measures how your cells hold energy along with the health of your cellular membranes throughout your body, and finally, how well or badly your cells manage water within and outside of your cells. This information is now known to predict cancer death and longevity potential. Using small alternating current I am able capsure phase angle, which is the way that this current bounces off your cell membranes producing a “phase shift”.

The higher your phase angle, above 8 degrees, the better your health. The lower your phase angle, for example lower than 4 degrees, then you are sick in a bad way! You may not even know it.

“Too many people hope that their health efforts are working. Many practitioner won’t measure phase angle because they either have never heard of it, do not understand it, or are avoiding it because they do not want a baseline that may reveal that the wellness and health advice is really not working. I suggest that each and everyone of my patients allow me to test their phase angle. Can it be positively affected by healthy lifestyle when done right? YES!
